Hurricane Gustav has once again become a hurricane Friday afternoon. Then it went through rapid intensification overnight Friday and into Saturday to become a dangerous category 4 hurricane. The projected path of Gustav is toward the northwest. It is expected to slam into the southwestern coast of Cuba later tonight as a category 4/5 hurricane. On Sunday morning Gustav emerged into the Gulf of Mexico as a category 4 hurricane. The GFDL and HWRF forecast models send Gustav straight up the gulf and make landfall between Houston and New Orleans as a category 4 hurricane late Monday. A category 4 hurricane has winds of 131 to 155 mph. Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans in 2005 as a low-end category 3 hurricane. If the projected path of Hurricane Gustav does in fact verify for the northern gulf coast target, parts of LA, MS, and AL could be in for some catastrophic damage. The state of Louisiana has already established a hurricane evacuation plan that could begin Saturday.
Another potential problem with hurricane Gustav is that its projected path takes in directly into the oil fields in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This oil field accounts for at least one fifth of all U.S. oil production. Several rigs are evacuating personnel before Hurricane Gustav comes storming through. As hurricane Gustav strengthens more oil platforms will be evacuated. If hurricane Gustav disrupts production long enough, gasoline prices will rise in the U.S. In 2004 and 2005, hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, and Rita all affected oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Some platforms suffered significant damage when the hurricanes moved through with winds of cat 3/4 strength.

Idealism in the Ranks?

Might be a few idealistic privates out there, Crappy, but career military men (and women) fight primarily for pay and each other. The same warriors who served for eight years under the Bush Administration also served for eight years under the Clinton Administration.

well, all I know is that I never met a man in a foxhole who was an atheist. ----mick
That would be because atheists would have opted out and deferred from fighting in the first place; fighting for peace is like screwing for virginity.
The people IN the foxholes have bitten into the same lies about higher celestial ordinances and, you know what, they'll just keep biting.
Landfall--Let's Pray

Let’s pray the way Jesus taught us to pray, saying, “[Father] your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Since God alone has control of the hurricane, let’s glorify Him and pray that the storm accomplishes its intended purpose.
But what is the hurricane’s [God’s] intended purpose? Does God want to frighten millions of Gulf Coast residents to death? I don’t presume to know, but my best guess is that He is sending a wake-up call to our Nation. He is reminding unbelievers of the certainty of death so that they might consider where they will be in 100 years, and He is reminding Christians of His command that we share the message of salvation (along with all those warm blankets and hot meals).

"geez, people, grow up!!! This is a discussion about hurricane gustave, not religion. Talk about helping these people out when gustave hits the mainland"
Listen, Senior Redhead (aka. "Blog-Nazi"): this is a DISCUSSION. A variety of dissonant and discordant points of view and subject matters are apt to come up in a DISCUSSION. A cataclysmic event like a major hurricane brings out concerns from people that come out in all sorts of ways: including religious biases. If you aren't mature enough to engage in an organic discussion without resorting to hall-monitor tactics, then go back to coloring within the lines and not mixing your colors of Play-Doh.

For all you weather enthusiast that want to continue discussing hurricane Gustav, you are in luck. I created a forum just for that. Here it is:
'Faith in Jesus Christ' is the opiate of the masses (and the opportunistic as well as the fearful).
Fear

Don’t know much about “religion,” but faith in Jesus Christ properly directs fear rather than quells it. Jesus said, “I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” A refrain carried throughout the Bible, Old Testament and New, is that fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Gulf Coast residents need not fear Hurricane Gustav; rather they should reverence the one who controls the wind and waves. We ignore God at our own peril.

Compassion

Simon
“[The LORD] is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to REPENTANCE” (2 Peter 3:9b).
Compassion doesn’t begin with caring for hurricane survivors, but with issuing a clear warning to all those in danger.
The LORD warns His people, “When I say to the wicked, 'O wicked man, you will surely die,' and you do not speak out to dissuade him from his ways, that wicked man will die for his sin, and I will hold you accountable for his blood. But if you do warn the wicked man to turn from his ways and he does not do so, he will die for his sin, but you will have saved yourself” (Ezekiel 33:8-9).
Let's just pray for New Orleans. Remember the compassion of God as shown through his son. He is a gracious and compassionate God not wanting any to perish. We Christians should be known by our love and compassionate caring for those in need, as shown through the Red Cross, World Vision, Samartitan's Purse and so many other charities. Are you caring for the "least of these brothers of mine?"

Siloam
"What is the Lord telling us through natural disaster? The answer is found in Christ’s words uttered in the face of the tragedy that killed 18 persons when the tower in Siloam fell upon them: “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:5). Christ did not spend His time arguing about who was to be blamed for the tragedy. Instead, He reminded His listeners that tragedies are a wake up call to repent."
"The present intensification of natural and man-made disasters must be seen as clear signs of God’s final warning to mankind of the impending divine judgment. . . . Since these things are about to happen, “What sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God”? (2 Pet 3:11:13)."
To read two scholarly perspectives on the issue (Dr. Douglass's and Dr. Bacchiocchi's), paste the following link into your browser:
"'if my people, who are called by my Name, will turn from their wicked ways, and repent, i will heal their land, and i will restore them, and they will be my children, and I will be their God.'
i can only pray that yall take this one seriously, and learn from katrina. May God now be your God. Turn away from idols. for (God's Rod) Gustav is on the way to exact God's discipline on His land."
Where do people get these ideas? How come, for these people, science alone provides a good enough explanation for some phenomena —like the internal combustion engine that takes this guy to church every week so he can speak in tongues, or the computer he's using so he can spew the nonsense quoted above— but not for other phenomena, like earthquakes or hurricanes?
Life is complicated, holy roller. Grow up, read Acts & Luke, and learn some compassion.

I seem to recall "Judge not, lest ye be judged."
You seem rather high & mighty. You think New Orleans is just full of horrendous sinners? What about Washington DC? What about Las Angeles? Or Las Vegas?
Have you ever even BEEN to New Orleans?!?
Who gave you the right to judge anyone? I guess you would have actually tried throwing a stone at Mary Magdeline?
