HURRICANE IKE - LIVE COVERAGE FROM ABC 13 HOUSTON, TX

The latest hurricane model forecast have put potential U.S. landfall of Hurricane Ike along the Texas Gulf coast.  This puts the region from Port Lavaca to Port Arthur at the greatest risk.  Landfall of Hurricane Ike is dependent on the speed of Ike over the next few days.  If Ike continues at a quick pace it will result in a more southern landfall.  However, if the pace of Ike slows, then the hurricane will likely be picked up by the southwest winds aloft forecasted this weekend.  Refardless, Hurricane Ike is forecasted to be major hurricane at this time period with winds in excess of 115 mph.

The upper level winds and sea surface temperatures provide a favorable environment for Hurricane Ike.  SSTs in the Gulf of Mexico are greater than 29 C.  The current water temperature from near Galveston is 86 F, http://www.srh.noaa.gov/productview.php?pil=HGXTIDHGX.  In addition to the already warm waters in the Gulf, Hurricane Ike will pass over three eddies of warmer warmer which will add fuel to the fire.  Some of the latest computer models make Hurricane Ike a category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.  Residents along the Gulf coast should keep a close watch on Hurricane Ike.

Waves, I mean big ones too!

I heard on TV that the best waves, 20-30 feet, are actually breaking about 1/2 - 1 mile away from the shore. I guess because the water depth is too shallow right along the shore. So, the best stuff is way too far out for me to hit it up, but every once in a while there are some good waves up close. I think yesterday was the best day for surfing.
Wish I was there!

Im so pissed to be in Germany and not in the middle of this storm, I bet the waves are awesome for surfing on Galveston Island right now! Why cant Hurricanes hit when im actually back at home?

We never evacuate. Enjoyed direct hits in Florida as well as Houston:). Husband provides military support for Ellington Field which is 30 miles north of Galveston. Across the street from Ellington Field is Sycamore Valley. Most residents are preparing for a hurricane PARTY. We all stayed behind to allow Galveston residents to evacuate. Didn't want a Rita repeat. Wish us luck. Thanks for this site. Enjoying all the details.
Hurricane Ike Landfall

The latest NHC forecast has Ike making landfall on Galveston Island. This is the worst case scenario with maximum damage. It is important to take note that the models have been trending further to the right. Nevertheless, Houston is not in a good position. Forecast storm surge is more than 25 feet.

Thanx Dr. jacomb ivanovich, i had no idea where Ike was going, but since you were kind enough to chime in with your expert opinion, I can sleep safe tonight. Thanks a million! Good to know you are watching the weather for good ole Texas.

hey neal, the needs of the many have never outweighed the needs of a Bush few. Less is more. This hurricane is going to strike Huston and Galvistino bay.
I don't think it will hit Beaumont this time

Although Ike seems to look like hurricane Rita, it started little lower compared to Rita.It seems like it will hit central Texas, somewhere between Houston and Corpus Christi.
Thanx for the pity

Hahaha, thanxs dw but i am from Houston, i currently live in Germany working as a weather forecaster for the USAF (imagine that) so Ill be ok, my family is evacuating to Dallas and we got hurricane insurance so things could be worse. Hopefully it will stay a CAT 2 or 3, i dont see it making CAT 4 like they predicted, too much upper level shearing and dry air intrusion. Houston will survive, us Texans are tough SOBs unlike those Louisiana whimps who always need our help because they build their cities under sea level.

Like Neil I live in Houston. House prices are too high there. So I'm hoping Ike wipes 'em out, get people to leave, drop house prices by 50%. Sounds good to me -- I rent!

25 cents a gallon more? We'll get anyway since the refineries have to shutdown REGARDLESS of where this hits. If it damages ANY refinery, we will see another $1.00 a gallon.

Any hot chicks from Houston wanna come shack up?
dammit
21 Thursday, 11 September 2008 05:22

Hopefully it keeps curving or the US will see about a 25 cent per gallon increase in gas and Houston is gonna get f*ed up!

So does anyone remember the path Rita took. This is exactly where they said it would hit for Rita and it ended up hitting us in Port Arthur/Beaumont Area. What are the chances of this happening twice?

Most likely!
Ike is tracking at only 8 MPH and a front from the West is pushing against it. It's gonna bend it like Beckham, mark my word.

Dont wish this storm on anybody
16 Wednesday, 10 September 2008 19:45
Neal
I really dont wish a Hurricane of this magnitude on anyone but if it means the difference of hitting Texas and killing fellow Texans as well as driving up gas prices further, I rather have it hit Mexico where not as many people live and send them support and money to rebuild after the storm. Economically speaking, its cheaper to hit Mexico where there is less to rebuild than to plow thur Corpus Christi or Houston (my hometown)where there are billions of dollars of real estate and companies to be destroyed. The needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.
Ike's path

Forecasts are placing Ike's path on a more severe North-Westerly path than satelite imaging would suggest. Ike will make landfall straddling equally the Texas-Louisiana border.

Ike and flood water surge

Eddy
Wow it has been a very rainy year already for most areas of the U.S. and I imagine Houston is about the same as I remember it with massive amounts of rainfall. If Ike does hit south of the Houston area the surge of water off the back eastern side of Ike could be very devistating.

This looks alot like the way Rita set up. It was forecasted to hit Houston then it slowed and re-curved into Beaumont. Ike is looking like Corpus Christi but if it slows it may hit Houston, which would be catostrophic.
well duh ike
